If I could go back in time and give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be:
Life is too short to eat puréed frozen bananas and pretend it’s ice cream.
Like all foods that fall into the “problematic for IBS” category, I’m all for finding you an alternative ice cream that you tolerate instead of completely eliminating it. Or resorting to sad banana ice cream.
The obvious answer- you’re probably thinking- is to switch to a non-dairy ice cream…
…but non-dairy ice cream products sometimes have high FODMAP ingredients that can trigger symptoms. Watch for:
❌ Inulin
❌ Erythritol (usually found in low calorie ice creams)
❌ Agave
❌ High fructose corn syrup
❌ Wheat
❌ Chicory root extract
Here are my favourite non-dairy ice creams I’ve tried so far this year.
Best Chocolate: Righteous Dairy-free Dark Chocolate
A true, rich, decadent chocolate. Enough said.
Best Fruit Flavour: Nora’s Strawberry
This one really surprised me on how delicious it is. It’s super creamy and has a fresh strawberry flavour.
Best Product That Won’t Break the Bank: President’s Choice Coconut Milk
This President’s Choice ice cream is almost half the price of the other brands but don’t let the lower price fool you- it’s just as good as the other brands.
Best Big Brand: Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia
Ben & Jerry’s is one of the best non-dairy ice cream products on the market- BUT! many of their products contain wheat. Cherry Garcia doesn’t, however, so although it may not be the most popular flavour, it is IBS-friendly.
Best Bar: So Delicious Coconut Almond Bars
I hated on So Delicious for a long time. They were one of the OG non-dairy ice creams on the market and if you remember the early days, the products available to us weren’t that great. I’ve come around recently and really enjoy their ice cream bar products.
